About Department
Psychology as a subject at the degree level was introduced in June 1985, and at the master's level, 'Counselling Psychology' was introduced in June 2006. This is the only and first counselling-specialized department in the Shivaji University jurisdiction. In its endeavour to widen the horizons of the humanities, the Counselling Psychology Course was designed to train professional psychologists to serve in hospitals, organizations, schools, and counselling centres, as well as marketing research agencies.
The department has a total strength of 3 teaching faculty, of which there are currently 2 Associate Professors. There are Ten Guest Faculties for the Master's degree who are highly qualified and working in the professional counselling sector. The teaching and research programs are supported by the technical staff at different levels. Apart from the Student Laboratory, which is meant for the practicum work for the students at the Master's level, the best and latest technological gadgets have been procured and set up to enhance the teaching and research activities. One of the strengths of the teaching program is its ability to establish interfaces with organizations working in varied domains like hospitals, NGOs, schools, corporate sectors, etc.
The M.A. in Counselling Psychology Course includes the latest trends in psychology with an emphasis on practical training and field work. The course places special emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge and skills through theoretical understanding and its practical implications. The department has already started the process of revising all undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition to lecturing as the primary mode of instruction, teaching is also interactive, with due emphasis on seminars, presentations, and discussions, as well as experiential exercises and peer mentoring. From time to time, the department organizes conferences, seminars, training programs, workshops, etc. for the benefit of faculty and students. It has hosted the MMP conference with the help of ICSSR, as well as an international conference and various national-level conferences and seminars. The Department has organized seminars and conferences on positive psychology, quality of life, human resource development, mental health, culture and psychology, and health psychology. In addition, many research projects have also been undertaken. The department has signed an MOU with various NGOs, schools, and institutes that involves collaboration in practical teaching and research.
Our UG and PG students have consistently stood first on the Shivaji University merit list. More than 30 students have received merit scholarships and awards from Shivaji University. There are more than 50 students who have received prestigious awards for research at state and university-level research competitions. Consistent participation in the AWISHKAR state-level research competition Under the lead college activity in every academic calendar, there are more than 20 activities run by our UG and PG students to create awareness of mental health, various disorders, and health-related issues.
